Andamooka Matrix Opal, pinfire colour orange green, Sterling silver wire wrapped Australian pendant

Andamooka Matrix Opal, pinfire orange green, Sterling silver wire wrapped pendant

A freeform oval 20 mm piece of Andamooka Matrix opal. It has a multitude of rainbow pinprick green and orange, however the colour is directional, so that it is best viewed from certain angles and lights. For some reason it's been one of my favourites hanging around but I decided to wrap it and even if it's not the flashiest opal, someone will love it as I do. As with all opal, it is best viewed in direct light. This stone has been treated with sugar and heat to darken the host stone and make the fire of the opal more visible, and then polished. I have wire wrapped it in Sterling silver wire with a weave bail and the finished pendant is 40 mm long. It comes on a free silver plated chain in an organza bag.

A very different and beautiful rare gemstone, totally unique!

Andamooka Opal

Andamooka opal comes from a small outback town in South Australia. The work involved in mining this opal, the small field it comes from and the gorgeous results mean that it is a unique type of Australian opal. There is not much material coming from this field these days and therefore this type of opal is becoming rare and expensive. It has ‘pinfire’ flash, little specks of colour in a host stone, and the greater the concentration the more brilliant the colour.
