Andamooka Matrix Opal, pinfire colour, Sterling silver wire wrapped opal pendant red green

Australian Andamooka Opal Sterling silver wire wrapped pendant

A freeform long oval 35 mm piece of Andamooka Matrix opal, this stone has a multitude of pinprick colour of red and green across the face and bright red flashes at an angle. As with all opal, it is best viewed in direct light. This stone has been treated with sugar and heat to darken the host stone and make the fire of the opal more visible, and then polished. I have wire wrapped it in Sterling silver wire and the finished pendant is 45 mm long. It comes on a free silver plated chain in an organza bag.

A very different and beautiful rare gemstone, totally unique!

Andamooka opal comes from a small outback town in South Australia. The work involved in mining this opal, the small field it comes from and the gorgeous results mean that it is a unique and more rare type of Australian opal. It has ‘pinfire’ flash, little specks of colour in a host stone, and the greater the concentration the more brilliant the colour. Darker ‘black’ based Andamooka Matrix opals have been treated to enhance the visibility of the colours.
